Interview with Danny Schechter-”The News Dissector” Independent Filmmaker, Blogger & Media Critic
Economic Warrior is delighted to interview Danny Schechter. Danny is one of the foremost media critics in the United States and one of the few experts to speak out about the media’s role in the economic collapse–which in many ways echoes how the media complied with Wall Street during the 1920s before The Great Depression. Danny’s expertise in the media is deep and wide. A graduate of Cornell with a Master’s degree from the London School of Economics, he has also been a Neiman Fellow at Harvard and has been an adjunct professor of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia. Danny began his media career as the “News Dissector” at WBCN in Boston, later he was a producer for ABC newsmagazine 20/20, where he produced 50 segments, two of which won national Emmy Awards and two others were nominated. Danny was also part of the start-up staff at CNN in Atlanta. As of August 2010, Danny has reported from 62 countries. In this interview, we discuss his latest documentary about the financial crisis, Plunder: The Crime of Our Time which also has a companion book. We discuss the medias role in the collapse. Other recent works include In Debt We Trust where Schechter, in 2006 rightly warned about how America is now a culture of debt and a circle of tears.
